| Science Fair—February 15, 2001
Thanks to the generosity of the Home &
School Association, OLHC has been very fortunate to have the
teaching experience of Mrs. Kathy Schugsta in special science
sessions since the beginning of the school year. Every other
week, Mrs. Schugsta visits our classrooms, bringing with her
incredible bags
of equipment and supplies. She performs experiments and
demonstrations that are interesting, entertaining, and very
educational. She is helping each grade prepare for the Science
Fair in February. Parents will have an opportunity to visit
the Science Fair and hear Mrs. Schugsta give a brief talk on
science education on Thursday evening, February 15th.
The following is a brief overview of what each class will be
doing for the Science Fair.
In Grades 1 to 4 each class will:
-- follow the Scientific Method
-- work as a unit doing one experiment per
class
-- present one backboard per class with one
table display
-- each student will have a personal summary (one page) of the
project which will be part of the table display
Grade 1
Seed Germination: Will extra heat have an affect on the rate
of germination?
Grade 2
Water Cycle: Will different color water evaporate at the same
rate?
Grade 3
Matter and Energy: Will the use of mechanical energy melt ice?
Grade 4
Oceans: Is salt water more dense than unsalted water?
In Grade 5:
Types of Energy: What effect will dissolving different salts
have on the temperature of the water?
-- the students will work in groups
-- each group will perform the same experiment
-- the groups will share their results
-- the class will follow the scientific method
-- the class will present one backboard with
one table display
-- each student will have a personal report of
the project (three pages)
In Grade 6:
-- students will be divided into groups
-- each group will perform a different
experiment
-- each group will present their own backboard
with table display
-- each student will present a personal report
on his/her project (report will include research and
bibliography)
-- Group topics:
Sound, Evaporation, Laws of Motion,
Electricity, Rusting
In Grades 7 and 8:
-- students will work in pairs to complete an
individual project
-- each project will have a backboard and
table display
-- each student will present a complete
scientific report on his/her project (report will include
