Pre-School Handbook

Illness/Reporting Children Absent

Out of consideration for other children, we ask parents not to send children to school who have exhibited vomiting, diarrhea, or fever within 24 hours of a school day.

The following list indicates the time period which children should remain home from school when having contracted any of the following common communicable diseases:

Chickenpox - Approximately six days after spots appear or until blisters crust and dry.
German Measles (Rubella) - Five Days after symptoms appear.
Impetigo Contagiosisa - Twenty-four hours after treatment has begun
Lice (Pediculosis) - Until after treatment.  Proof of treatment can be shown by bringing in box top from the appropriate treating agent.  After the second occurrence, a doctor's note is required for re-admittance to school.
Measles - Five days after the rash appears.
Mumps - Approximately nine days after symptoms appear or after swelling subsides.
Pink Eye (Acute Contagious Conjunctivities) - Twenty-four hours from the start of the appropriate therapy.
Respiratory Strepto-cocal Infections (including Scarlet Fever) - Seven days from the onset or twenty-four hours from the start of the appropriate therapy.
Ringworm (all types) - Until judged non-infective by the child's physician.  A doctor's note may be required for re-admittance to school.
Tonsillitis - Twenty-four hours from the start of the appropriate therapy.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) - Four weeks from the onset or five days after antibiotic treatment has begun.

Parents will notified immediately in the event of sudden illness or accidents of a serious nature.  Please be certain the office and the homeroom teacher have the current information for emergency contact.  Parents are asked to call the pre-school and report the absence, and the reason for the absence, of their child.  This call can be made prior to 8:30 AM and a message left on the Pre-school answering machine (215-887-8305).
